Why CEE Gas Routes Matter Again

Central and Eastern Europe is entering another winter where gas infrastructure will matter as much as gas price. The region is no longer shaped by one dominant east-west supply logic. LNG terminals, reverse flows, interconnectors, Ukrainian storage, Balkan routes, Black Sea projects, and the Vertical Gas Corridor are all competing to define where gas can move, where it gets stuck, and where traders can still capture spreads.

For energy traders, the question is practical: which route creates real optionality for winter 2026, and where will congestion create price differences large enough for arbitrage?

The answer depends on three layers:

  • physical capacity;
  • tariff and regulatory design;
  • legal access to transportation, storage, and trading routes.

This is where geopolitics turns into trading math.

The Vertical Corridor: Strategic Promise, Operational Friction

The Vertical Gas Corridor is designed to move gas from Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, with broader links toward Hungary, Slovakia and Central Europe. It is built around existing infrastructure, upgrades, and reverse-flow logic rather than one completely new pipeline.

The corridor gained new relevance after Ukraine and Moldova joined the initiative in 2024, expanding its political and commercial scope. Reuters reported in March 2026 that operators from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine had reached an agreement with the European Commission on a tariff structure intended to make the Greece-to-Ukraine route more competitive from October 2026. The corridor has already moved from concept to market testing

Reuters reported that a Greek joint venture planned to supply U.S. LNG to Ukraine in March 2026 via Greece’s Revithoussa terminal and the trans-Balkan pipeline system through Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova. Ukraine has also sought to increase LNG and diesel imports through Greece, with Naftogaz highlighting interest in expanding volumes through Greek terminals and Vertical Corridor infrastructure. The strategic promise is clear: LNG landing in Greece can move northward into the CEE region and, potentially, into Ukrainian storage. The operational question is harsher: can the route deliver enough volume, at a competitive tariff, when winter demand and regional capacity constraints intensify?

Alternative Corridors: LNG, Trans-Balkan, TAP and Western Routes

The Vertical Corridor is not the only game in the region. CEE supply security also depends on several alternative routes.

The Trans-Balkan Pipeline is becoming relevant again in reverse-flow logic. The Energy Community noted in May 2026 that, amid persistent geopolitical risks, the Trans-Balkan Pipeline could become a key corridor for diversified gas supplies to Moldova and Ukraine, while also unlocking the strategic role of Ukraine’s large underground gas storage system for the wider region. The Southern Gas Corridor also matters, especially through TANAP and TAP. It brings Caspian gas through Türkiye into Europe and connects to South-East European markets. Western and northern routes remain relevant as well. LNG through Poland, Germany, the Baltics and other EU entry points can still influence CEE pricing, especially when global LNG competition changes the relative cost of supply. Where the Biggest Spreads May Appear in Winter 2026

For traders, the most attractive spreads are likely to appear where infrastructure access, storage demand, and supply stress meet.

Greece-to-North Route Pricing

If LNG arrives in Greece and moves north through the Vertical Corridor, traders will watch whether transport tariffs make the route competitive against alternative supply through western hubs. The March 2026 tariff agreement is important because high transit costs can destroy the spread before gas reaches Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary or Slovakia.

Ukraine Storage Optionality

  • which entity books transport capacity;
  • whether the trader needs local registration or a licence;
  • how nomination and balancing obligations are allocated;
  • whether storage rights are compatible with resale plans;
  • how VAT and customs treatment apply along the route;
  • which sanctions and beneficial ownership checks are required;
  • how tariff changes affect the contract price;
  • what happens if capacity is curtailed or delayed.
